Peter was raised on a mixed farm in the Free State, South Africa. He qualified as a vet in 1983, and since 1988 he has focused on working in and serving the pig industry in South Africa. In 1993 he joined CS Vets, a specialist pig practice, where he is now a senior partner providing veterinary support to numerous large commercial pig units across South Africa and for past 10 years has been a consultant to SAPPO (South African Pork Producers Organization). CS Vet offers a wide range of services to pig farms including but not limited to health advice; production monitoring, in depth analysis & improvement; training on & off farm; expansion planning and budgets/cashflows to support the expansion; greenfield site planning of new piggeries including feasibility, building design, equipment advice, ventilation design, pig flow planning, cashflows, capex budgets and training for new employees particularly at managerial level. At SAPPO responsibilities include consumer assurance program; maintenance of National pig health & National biosecurity protocols and developing antimicrobial stewardship & guidelines to reduce antimicrobial usage in Pig farming. Peter owns his own 600 sow breeding/finishing unit 2 hour’s drive from Johannesburg. In recent year he has provided support to pig enterprises in various other African countries.
